Mercato delle Gaite

Coming a Full Circle from Bevagna, Italy - Los Angeles Travel Photographer

Sometimes, I wonder if our lives are just made of various circles. Some so big that took 10 years to complete, like the one for Niagara Falls. Fortunately, many are smaller.

In the Umbrian town of
Bevagna, we met a family of four with two lovely girls. The Italian father told us that he had studied in Spain and led groups along a pilgrimage. From him, we were thrilled to learn how the word “conclave” originated in his hometown Viterbo back in the 13th century. Things like this make for the bonuses in our travel memories.

However, in all honesty, our mind was set on experiencing the Mercato delle Gaite, during which people of Bevagna go back to the Medieval time to hold banquets, processions, and competitions between the four gaite (quarters). And, that’s the only thing we knew about this “hidden gem” in the province of Perugia.

At the end, we concluded this a satisfying experience, being content on all things Medieval, visual, or taste, until one year later, when our travel brought us to the path way of Camino de Santiago. That’s when I remembered the gentleman’s work with Spanish Steps and the 5-star chicken coop that he built for his wife.

Isn’t life interesting in some ways?

A Photograph That Saved A Thousand Words - Los Angeles Travel Photographer

Photography can be such an amazing venue for expression and explanation without many words. As the cliche goes, “a picture is worth a thousand words”. It’s also a great tool for representing a moment in time. However, just because one image saves one thousand words, it doesn’t mean no word is needed to provide context. This makes me think of a situation in which just because a good employee can save his boss tons of money doesn’t mean the employer won’t have to compensate him for his work. Alright, I digress…

Take this image for example, I made it before the National Historic Archery Challenge's Final in Bevagna, Italy. How would you interpret it or caption it? Knowing that
the people of this town is capable of drama in high fashion, I won’t be surprised at some of the answers that you will put below. 😊

We Walked into a Movie Set in Bevagna, Italy - Los Angeles Travel Photographer

When we stepped into this small town in the Umbria region of Italy that afternoon, we felt we walked into a movie set.  Every one seemed to be playing a role that belongs to the medieval era.

The golden light basking on the "set" does nothing in persuading me otherwise.  As we drew closer to the drama that unfolds in front of them, we became part of it.  In Bevagna, they don't show you what life in Medieval time was like, they live it.
